The Crawley Borough Emergency Centre is located in the basement of the Town Hall extension which was under construction in 1979 with the aid of a Home Office grant. Visit was kindly arranged by the current head of emergency planning for Crawley and the local area. The blast door is still there as is a huge communal tiled decontamination shower near the entrance and the standby generator which still works perfectly and was switched on for the visit. There are maps throughout and there are regular excercises in the bunker and the radio network is constantly up and running as is the air filtration. A small blast door in one wall was the emergency exit which has now been filled with concrete. The exit can be seen outside the town hall near the car park.
