One of a number commissioned by Surrey County Council just before the beginning of WW2. in Epsom there were two built for air raid protection during the blitz and later used during the V1 and V2 rocket attacks on London, the 2nd shelter is now under the nearby golf course and cannot be accessed. it was built in 3 stages, so it seems, with 3 different types of tunnel, chalk, brick and the standard corrugated iron. The shelter had a canteen, first aid station, gents and ladies toilets and would have had numerous sleeping areas.
There was talk of it being used as a cold war bunker during the 1960s but after being surveyed it was not deemed suitable.
Now looked after by www.eliteactiongames.com who kindly allowed a visit. They are happy for visitors by appointment. The shelter is securely locked.
